Skor: 2-1

A fine Jonathan Ruiz display helped St George’s clinch an important victory to steer the team to second place in the standings on goal difference as the first match from the second round kicked off at the Tedesco Stadium yesterday.

St George’s started on attack with a long-range Terrence Farrugia drive finishing just wide.

St Andrew’s hit back with a Michael Valenzia shot from the distance that fell off target before they took the lead on 17 minutes.

All looked safe for St George’s when from a Patrick Briscoe White cross from the left, no St Andrew’s players had made the follow-up but the ball was amazingly headed into the back of the net by Emmanuel Sevasta for a classical own goal.

St Andrew’s could have added a second when Nicky Vella Petroni found Kurt Coleiro whose lob was saved by Thomas Galea.

Dylan Zarb finished off a fine solo-effort for St George’s on 32 minutes only for keeper Filippo Carandente to save. But, St George’s drew level seven minutes from half-time when Mark Barbara finished off a clever move by Ruiz who left a couple of defenders in his wake.

St George’s looked the more menacing team after the break and Ruiz made it 2-1 on 57 minutes when he finished off a Benoir Fenech delivery from the right.

Two minutes later the personal Ruiz show continued when his cute lob hit the side-netting.

St George’s could have put the game to bed when a move between Gary Inguanez, Ruiz and Barbara finished with the latter just missing the target from underneath the opponents’ goal.

St Andrew’s tried to salvage something from the game with Ronnie Hartvig testing Galea with a 30-metre scorcher with the ball just missing the left-hand post.

But, St George’s did well to control the match until the final whistle with some possession play to preserve their lead and secure three precious points in their quest for promotion.
