St George’s kept up the pressure on their fellow promotion challengers with a hard-fought victory over bottom side Msida St Joseph.

With Balzan and Mosta winning on Saturday, St George’s couldn’t afford to drop any points. They found it hard to break down Msida but three substitutions by coach Joey Falzon changed the course of the game.

The first scoring opportunity came St George’s way in the 15th minute but Ruiz shot straight at Jeremy Alden. Minutes later, Luke Agius again tested the Msida custodian but Alden saved well.

The Cospicua side continued to pile the pressure on Msida. They should have forged ahead on 25 minutes when Dylan Zarb’s cross was handled by Karl Saliba in the area. Glenn Bonello took the resultant penalty but his shot was too weak and Alden saved.

St George’s were almost made to pay for their miss a minute later when Adrian Farrugia’s free-kick fell to Neil Curmi whose half-volley hit the crossbar.

Seven minutes from half-time Ruiz’s first-timer finished inches wide. Only a minute from the start of the second half had passed when Msida were unlucky not to take the lead as Lyden Micallef’s effort from just outside the area crashed against the crossbar.

Msida stunned St George’s on 56 minutes when Achami picked up a long clearance, sped past the Saints defence and rounded the goalkeeper to score.

Falzon’s three substitutions paid instant dividends. On 63 minutes, the unmarked Mark Barbara headed home a Gary Inguanez cross.

St George’s started to dominate the game with Ruiz running the show with some mazy dribbles.

With 15 minutes left, Ruiz’s drive brought the best out of Alden and, at the other end, Achami shot high and wide from a good position.

St George’s went 2-1 up 11 minutes from time when a good move between Ryan Sell and Inguanez set up Ruiz who scored from close range.

As Msida pushed more men forward, they became more vulnerable at the back. Ruiz was brought down in the box by Lesley Cassar late in the game. This time, Iguanez did not miss from the 11-metre mark.
