Antoine Sacco snatched a last-gasp equaliser for Lija who played the last 18 minutes of their match against St George’s with a man short after Kurt Formosa was sent off.

St George’s will feel hard done by the drawn outcome but the promotion hopefuls ultimately paid the price for being over-cautious. After going ahead in the first half, St George’s were more concerned about conserving their slender lead instead of looking for the killer goal.

Lija were slightly better than their opponents early on, going close in the fourth minute when Sacco’s drive finished inches wide. Three minutes later, Lija’s Scerri tried his luck from outside the area with the ball sailing just over the crossbar.

The Saints gradually began to find their rhythm and on 16 minutes, Glenn Bonello swept past two defenders but his shot just missed the target. In the 26th minute, Bonello was unlucky as his free-kick came off the crossbar.

St George’s went ahead in the 34th minute when Bonello was brought down in the box by Matthew Fleri Soler. The lanky striker picked himself up to put the Saints ahead from the spot.

Lija were the more aggressive side after the change of ends. Three minutes into the second half, St George’s goalkeeper Anthony Galea missed a cross and Sacco tried to lob the ball into the net but Dylan Zarb cleared.

Midway into the second half, Bonello shot over the bar after a good one-two with Ruiz.

With 18 minutes to go, Lija’s Formosa was red-carded for a foul on Ruiz. Despite their numerical handicap, Lija continued to battle hard and their fighting spirit was rewarded in added time.

Sacco produced a first-time effort that hit the crossbar but the ball bounced over the line. Assistant referee Chris Francalanza signalled that the ball had crossed the line, much to Lija’s delight.
