Skor: 3-4

Two late goals in the space of three minutes turned the tables in favour of Balzan as St George’s were dislodged from the top placing in the standings yesterday.

This was surely the best game of the season. It had everything, good football, drama and goalmouth action.

Balzan made all the early running and after only four minutes a Pedro dos Santos Calcado drive was parried by Thomas Galea. From the rebound, Lydon Micallef shot just over the crossbar.

Joe Borg’s Balzan continued to play the better football but it was the Saints who forged ahead on 19 minutes with their first real threat at goal when Jonathan Ruiz hit a scorcher from just inside the box following a move started by Gary Inguanez and Glenn Bonello.

Balzan looked stunned and St George’s profited to double their lead just before half time. A Bonello free-kick took a deflection on its way past goalkeeper Frederick Tabone.

Balzan pushed forward in numbers at the start of the second half and substitute Steve Meilak soon halved the deficit when he slotted home past Galea.

But Joey Falzon’s side restored their two-goal advantage thanks to a Ruiz goal after a perfect service from Dylan Zarb cross.

The Cottonera side continued to dictate matters and Gary Inguanez should have made it 4-1 when all alone with the Balzan custodian beaten.

The Saints were made to pay for those missed chances as Balzan pulled one back on 70 minutes through Renato Conceicao and with time running out a Calcado free-kick hit a post and Meilak slotted home from the rebound to make it 3-3.

But more drama was to come.

On 89 minutes, the Saints defence left Lydon Micallef unmarked and he headed in from a free-kick to score a dramatic winner for Balzan. The Saints were dumbstruck with Balzan crowning a fine week after their ‘victory’ over Msida on the table in midweek.
