Skor: 2 – 1

St George’s made it a hat-trick of wins to keep their 100 per cent record intact following a hard-earned win over Melita who lost rhythm after having a player sent off just before half-time.

The red card to Luca Marinelli swayed the game in favour of now sole leaders St George’s as up to that point the Amateurs were 1-0 up and playing the better football at the Tedesco Stadium.

The game started at a slow pace with goalmouth action coming at a premium as the two teams tested each other in a dull opening phase.

The Saints tried to impose their game in midfield but Melita were faster on the ball and did not give their opponents time to settle.

A Jonathan Ruiz shot for St George’s flew wide and Melita hit back with a Luke Micallef grounder that also failed to reach the desired target. But, Melita forged ahead on the half hour when a Micallef shot was partially stopped by keeper Thomas Galea and in ran Matthew Borg to stab the loose ball home.

St George’s looked stunned and Melita grew in stature to take hold of the proceedings.

However, on 38 minutes Martinelli received a second yellow card and got sent off after a foul on Brazilian Ruiz.

Now, it was Melita’s turn to lose pace and the Saints seized the chance to get back in it.

They dominated the second 45 minutes and Glenn Bonello soon went close after the restart with an acrobatic shot that was saved by Zahra.

Gary Inguanez saw the ball going just over the top after a looping header following a melee inside the Melita box.

St George’s drew level on 58 minutes when Inguanez caught the Melita defence unawares and his cross was tapped into the net by Bonello, who had all the time in the world before drawing the two teams level, 1-1.

St George’s pressed the accelerator as they started to spray neat passes and create openings inside the Melita half.

On 71 minutes a Bonello header from a corner finished just over the bar and five minutes later the Saints sealed it thanks to Bonello.

He was quick to go past two defenders before beating Zahra with a perfect lob.
